Unitarian Universalists are committed to fostering a community that reflects respect, compassion, inclusion, and human dignity. To support these values, all content submitted for publication, promotion, discussion, or distribution through BUUF platforms must meet a minimum Dignity Index score of 6 or higher.
What the Dignity Index Measures
The Dignity Index is a framework that evaluates communication based on the degree to which it recognizes the humanity, worth, and value of others. Higher scores reflect language that promotes understanding, respect, empathy, and constructive dialogue. Lower scores often contain demeaning, dismissive, hostile, or dehumanizing language.
Content Requirements
To be accepted for publication or distribution through BUUF channels:
- Content must achieve a Dignity Index rating of 6 or above.
- Content must demonstrate respect toward individuals and groups, including those with differing viewpoints.
- Content should encourage constructive engagement rather than division or hostility.
- Personal attacks, insults, dehumanizing language, or content intended to demean others will not be accepted.
- BUUF reserves the right to review, request revisions, or decline content that does not meet these standards.
Our Commitment
BUUF believes that meaningful dialogue can occur even when people disagree. By maintaining a minimum Dignity Index standard, we seek to create a welcoming environment where diverse perspectives can be shared in ways that honor the inherent dignity and worth of every person.
Content that falls below a Dignity Index score of 6 may be returned to the author with recommendations for revision before consideration for publication.
Principle: Strong ideas are welcome. Disrespect is not. All published content must contribute to a culture of dignity, understanding, and constructive conversation.
